The Red Village Integrates Chainlink VRF to Fairly Distribute Genesis Champion NFTs
We’re excited to announce that The Red Village, a groundbreaking play-to-earn, multiplayer fighting game based around NFTs, has integrated Chainlink Verifiable Random Function (VRF) on Polygon mainnet. By integrating the industry-leading decentralised oracle network, we now have access to a tamper-proof and auditable source of randomness needed to help ensure that all 5000 Genesis Champion NFTs are fairly distributed to collectors. Ultimately, this creates a more exciting, transparent, and fraud-proof user experience, as each collector will have an equal opportunity to receive the most sought after Genesis Champions during minting.
The Red Village is a dark fantasy multiplayer fighting tournament that takes inspiration from popular traditional gaming titles such as Diablo and Runescape, as well as next-generation blockchain-based games such as ZED RUN and Axie Infinity. With The Red Village, players get access to an immersive world with rewarding gameplay, including player versus player (PvP) tournaments, multiplayer Faction Tournaments, and future metaverse integration.
Collectors who mint during the Genesis sale (4PM EST Wed 17th November, 2021) will receive a Blood Portal on Ethereum mainnet. These Blood Portals are identical ERC-1155 tokens that entitle holders to a Genesis Champion (and a lot of other access and utility). The Champions themselves will emerge from the Blood Portals (as an airdrop on the Polygon network) shortly after the sale concludes. By leveraging Chainlink VRF as the best-in-class random number generator solution, we will remove any doubts that the team, collectors, or the broader community can influence the distribution process of Genesis Champions in any way.
In order to prove to collectors and the wider NFT community that no-one is given preferential treatment or unfairly scores the rarest cosmetic traits, we need access to a secure random number generator (RNG) that any user could independently audit. However, RNG solutions for smart contracts require several security considerations to prevent manipulation and ensure system integrity. For instance, RNG solutions derived from blockchain data like block hashes can be exploited by miners/validators, while off-chain RNG solutions derived from off-chain APIs are opaque and don’t provide users with definitive proof about the integrity of the process.
After reviewing various solutions, we selected Chainlink VRF because it’s based on cutting-edge academic research, supported by time-tested oracle infrastructure, and secured through the generation and on-chain verification of cryptographic proofs that prove the integrity of each random number supplied to smart contracts.
Chainlink VRF works by combining block data that is still unknown when the request is made with the oracle node’s pre-committed private key to generate both a random number and a cryptographic proof. The Red Village smart contract will only accept the random number input if it has a valid cryptographic proof, and the cryptographic proof can only be generated if the VRF process is tamper-proof. This provides our users with automated and verifiable assurances directly on-chain that the Genesis Champion distribution process was provably fair and was not tampered with by the oracle, outside entities, or The Red Village team.
The Red Village team is exploring further opportunities to leverage Chainlink VRF in-game. For example, Chainlink VRF could be used to randomise the fighting draw for PvP Tournaments and other various elements of battle.
“Decentralisation and fairness are at the heart of NFTs and it is vitally important to us that our community is completely confident in the way that Genesis Champions are distributed to collectors. Chainlink VRF has been proven time and time again to provide this fairness to the blockchain community, which is why we are thrilled to integrate it with The Red Village”
— Lucien Dorman, Co-Founder of The Red Village.

About Chainlink
Chainlink is the industry standard for building, accessing, and selling oracle services needed to power hybrid smart contracts on any blockchain. Chainlink oracle networks provide smart contracts with a way to reliably connect to any external API and leverage secure off-chain computations for enabling feature-rich applications. Chainlink currently secures tens of billions of dollars across DeFi, insurance, gaming, and other major industries, and offers global enterprises and leading data providers a universal gateway to all blockchains.
